March 21: Arrive Jakarta

Welcome to Jakarta!  After passing through Immigration & Customs, you will be transferred to the Keraton at the Plaza hotel in Jakarta for a welcome reception. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to join your hosts for an evening walk to some delicious street food vendors for dinner.

March 22: Day Trip to Bogor

Today we will enjoy a day trip to the city of Bogor.  Bogor once served as the capital of the Sunda Kingdom and as the summer residence of the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.  After a stop for refreshments at a historical colonial building (now a modern hotel), we will continue to the Bogor Botanical Gardens, the oldest Botanical Garden in Southeast Asia.  In 2017, former U.S. president Barack Obama was welcomed by Indonesian president Joko Widodo ("Jokowi") to the presidential palace in Bogor Botanical Gardens.  After stopping for lunch in Bogor ($), we will return to Jakarta for a free evening at your leisure.  You may opt to join our hosts for more walking among street food vendors and a visit to the mall for batik shopping.

March 23: China Town, Old Town & Group Dinner

We will depart early this morning for an exclusive breakfast in China Town, at the same restaurant visited by Indonesian president Jokowi.  We will then continue on walking tour through China Town before stopping at Kota Tua ("Old Town"), the former capital of the Dutch East Indies and center of the Asian spice trade.  After a visit to the Jakarta History Museum in Fatahillah Square, we will sit for lunch at a local Padang style restaurant, where tradtional Indonesian specialties will be served family style for our group.  Enjoy the rest of the afternoon free before we gather as group for our Jakarta farewell dinner at La Moda, a short walk from our hotel.

March 24: Jakarta to Yogyakarta

This morning we will depart for the Jakarta airport to take a short flight (1 hour) to Yogyakarta, considered the cultural center of Java.  Upon arrival, we will be transferred to a local restaurant for a group lunch.  You may enjoy nasi gudeg, a young jackfruit stewed for several hours with palm sugar, coconut milk. and spices.  After lunch, we will depart for a guided visit to Prambanan, a 9th century Hindu temple compound and UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This evening, enjoy an optional stroll through the Malioboro Street market and dinner at a local restaurant.

March 25: Exploring Borobudur & Yogyakarta

After an early breakfast at our hotel, we will depart for Borobudur,  a 9th century temple recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest Buddhist temple in the world.  The temple consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. It is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa.   The rest of the afternoon and evening will be free at our leisure.  You may opt to join your hosts for walk through Malioboro Street for street food and batik shopping.  

March 26: Royal Palace of Yogyakarta

After a leisurely breakfast, we will depart for Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, a royal palace complex that is the seat of the reigning Sultan of Yogyakarta and his family. The complex is a center of Javanese culture, and contains a museum displaying royal artifacts. It is guarded by the Yogyakarta Kraton Guards and we will enjoy a traditional gamelan dance performance.  Next we will visit Taman Sari, where the sultan entertains guests.  This afternoon, we will return to our hotel and spend the rest of the day with free time.  This evening, we will have an optional group dinner ($) to bid our farewell to the lovely city of Yogyakarta.

March 27: Yogyakarta to Malang

We will depart early this morning to take a train to Malang.  Have your books, e-readers and iPods ready as we will enjoy vistas of the Javanese country side and discuss our favorite parts of our trip on this 8 hour journey.  After arriving in Malang and checking into our hotel, we will enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening free at our leisure. 

March 28: Mt Bromo

Get ready for an early departure to Mt Bromo, the active and iconic volcano of Java island.  Our guided jeep tour and horse back riding will feature several stops at viewpoints.  Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a plain called the "Sea of Sand" (Javanese: Segara Wedi or Indonesian: Lautan Pasir), a protected nature reserve since 1919.  We will return to Malang and our hotel late this afternoon for a free evening at our leisure.

March 29: Malang to Surabaya to Bali

This morning we will transfer by private bus to Surabaya for our flight to Bali.  Upon arrival at at Bali Ngurah Rai Airport, we will be greeted and transferred to our hotel in Ubud.  We'll stop for a late lunch at Naughy Nuri's, made famous for their Balinese BBQ.  Then we will visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary.  The rest of the evening will be free at our leisure.

March 30: Free Day in Ubud

After a busy few days, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at our hotel and a free day to explore Ubud and its surroundings.  If you're looking for activities, your hosts and tour guide will have plenty of suggestions.  You may want to eat lightly today because this evening, we have an optional group dining experience ($) at Room 4 Dessert, an all dessert restaurant featured on the Netflix Series Chef's Table.

March 31: Ulan Danu Beratan and Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Today our journey takes us to Ulan Danu Beratan.  Built in 1633, this temple is used for offerings ceremony to the Balinese water, lake and river goddess Dewi Danu, due to the importance of Lake Beratan as a main source of irrigation in central Bali.  We will then continue to the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

April 1: Free day in Ubud

After breakfast, enjoy one final free day to wander Ubud.  You may opt to visit one of the many palaces, like Pura Taman Saraswati, pictured below.  This evening, we will have our final group dinner at Hujan Locale, which features an eclectic menu of traditional Indonesian cuisine with a modern interpretation. 

April 2: Farewell to Indonesia

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your homeward journey.  Ask about transfer times to be included in the itinerary or if we can arrange your transfer separately for an additional expense.
